I have a small jewelry box for my "real" jewelry. As much as I'd love to fill a wall with gold and diamond jewelry, we can't afford that :( so as far as my real items go, I only own the classics. A small pair of diamond studs, a pair of peal earrings, a pearl necklace, a cocktail ring, a couple of white gold bands, and of coarse my wedding band and engagement ring!!
But it wasn't my "good" jewelry I was having a hard time storing, it was my costume jewelry I couldn't make room for! There's nothing I love more than a great long necklace to complete a look but, what I had was a tangled mess of chains and beads.
First:
My dad sprayed each of the trays white for me, while Lee worked on his car, kind of a work share program those two have going on :). It took 2 coats each, adding up to almost 2 cans of spray paint!
Second:
I decided on what jewelry I wanted where and Lee started screwing in the hooks, which immediately cracked the back panel. Bamboo is a very hard wood so it won't expand to accommodate the size of the hook's screw. So he had to drill pilot holes before screwing the hooks in . . . a bit more trouble but it worked!
Last:
We screwed the tray to the wall using an anchor and a screw (super simple).
I organized my jewelry by color, and style. I seem to have a lot of black jewelry so it all got grouped together.
Then I stored my brighter more colorful jewelry together,
and then my earth tone jewelry together.
I also have a few LONG necklaces so we installed some hooks off the bottom to hang them!!!
Total Cost:
$10 each for cutlery trays $30
1 can of spray paint (I had a leftover can in the garage already) $5
2 boxes of rubber coated hooks $3 each $6

You always have brilliant ideas! I wish your genius-ness will rub on me HAHA. I'm with you, I only have a few real jewelry and they were all given to me by my mom or husband. I only buy fashion accessories and I got tons!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea!! Thanks for sharing! Can't wait to do something similar in my new closet!
ReplyDeleteThat is such a creative idea. I never would have thought of it. Great job...great jewelry also!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I love it. =D
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea ~ love it.
ReplyDeletePssstt....you're mentioned today over at
http://thriftydecorchick.blogspot.com/2011/07/pops-of-green.html
Love this idea! Seems like all the jewelry storage ideas I've seen don't have space for chunky or long statement jewelry. This is brilliant!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea Ashli!!! I would have never thought of that. you really do come up with great ideas. I always look forward to see to what you post everyday.
ReplyDeleteI was just brainstorming for a new way to display my jewelry...What a clever idea! I know having my jewelry out where I can see it will encourage me to better use those pieces that get lost in the jumble of a jewelry box.
ReplyDeletebrilliant! Janell
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea for organizing your jewellery with limited space. Something like this might actually work for my closet!! Could you do a post on how you organize your closet? I'm always trying to organize my closet to make better use of the space and would love to see how you do it!
ReplyDeleteVery cute idea! Especially for those hair clips that just don't hang!! I did a jewelry board a couple months ago and now I'm rethinking a revamp!! Thanks for the inspiration!

Simply divine! I love it. Wonderful idea.
ReplyDeletePure genius!!
ReplyDeleteI love this idea! I even have some of those bamboo trays in my garage (my new house has fewer drawers). I almost got rid of them but couldn't. Now I can make this. And I have lots of jewelry because I sell lia sophia. Maybe I could do a giveaway on your blog...
ReplyDeleteXOXO, Kerstin
PS-I just posted about a mirror makeover inspired by your white mirror in your hall. Love it!
great idea
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, I LOVE THIS! I was just thinking the other day what to do with mine! I think I might just have to steal this idea! :)
ReplyDeleteCome on! That is crazy brilliant. I love how your brain works. I bought 2 bamboo cutlery trays at Winners a few weeks ago and I used them as......cutlery trays. What was I thinking?!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat everyone else said --*brilliant*! Not only functional, but looks great too. And I want to go "shopping" in your jewelry stash. You have great taste and interesting pieces. So glad you shared this project!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! Why have I never thought of this??
ReplyDeleteSeriously brilliant! I'm SO pinning this!
ReplyDeleteMany Blessings,
M.
That has got to be one of the best ideas I've ever seen! I'm kind of new to your blog, but I LOVE every post! I adore things that are both pretty & functional!
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
That is brilliant! I am still trying to get everything organized in our closet, and my jewelry is in a drawer in trays, but it is NOT working. Love this idea, and Megan's (she used command hooks on the back of her closet door).
ReplyDeleteI did something similar several years back but basically just screwed my hooks into the wall next to the medicine cabinet above/beside my vanity. Since my vanity area is in the little hall between the master bedroom and the bathroom and part of my dressing area, it's perfect.
ReplyDeleteI love your idea with the cutlery trays, though...and color coordinating? Genius!
Get out!! What a great idea! I am so doing this!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a creative solution! I'd like to know more about your shoe storage too!
ReplyDeleteYou are so darn smart, Ashli!! You can see all you have and know which colors you probably don't need to get much more of. And it looks great! I have some cuff bracelets and bangles I need to have out (or I forget about them). Any ideas you could offer would be so appreciate.
ReplyDeleteThat is a fabulous idea! You've got some fun colorful jewelry.
ReplyDeleteHow oh so veeeeeeeery smart!!!! I lke!!!
ReplyDeleteSuch a great idea! So what happens when you get a new piece? Do you have some spare space or will you just double up some of the necklaces etc..?
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous idea!!! I may need to try this!
ReplyDeleteGenius!!! I have a skinny wall between my two (non-walkin)closets. This would look great there!!!
ReplyDeletethis is such a great idea and you have some beautiful pieces! i especially love the silver necklace with all the pearl baubles!
ReplyDeleteps: i've been considering doing a jewelry post or video, so keep your eyes open!
ReplyDeleteI've been dealing with a tangled mess of jewelry lately and this looks amazing!
ReplyDeleteYou are so creative!
Megan
The ideas you come up with... so creative!! What a terrific solution, Ashli :-)
ReplyDeleteVictoria
Ashli that's one of the most innovative ideas around.... awesome.....looks like from the number of comments it's been a big hit with the readers as well....I just bought myself a $12 plastic thing this week to hang earings... that necklace thing is awesome. Regards Kathy A, Brisbane, Australia
ReplyDeleteAnonymous *itching about spelling errors.....stop reading then!! Geez!
ReplyDeleteOMG! I love this!! So gorgeous. So neat, tidy and organised! I love that when you open the doors, they wont swing madly or fall off.
ReplyDeleteThis is a HUGE "why didn't I think of that moment?" I am pinning this genius idea, and this is exactly why I am so in love with you!
ReplyDeletexoxo,
Jen
This is genius!
ReplyDeleteI just found your blog via Pinterest (thanks Jen) and this is the perfect solution for all my necklaces. I'm going to check out your archives and see what other ideas I can steal (ahem, borrow) in my closet. Thanks so much for sharing.
ReplyDeleteHey!! I also found your blog on Pinterest and gave this craft a shot. I think it looks amazing! Thank you so much for the idea! (My boyfriend thanks you, as well, for the extra counter space) lol
ReplyDeleteCheck out my jewelry display and let me know what you think! http://holleymaher.wordpress.com/blog-2/
What a great idea! It looks great!
ReplyDeleteHi! I'm new to your blog and so far I just love everything. I've been looking for a way to hang my necklaces up and this is the best idea I've seen yet! Thanks for posting this!
ReplyDeleteGenius!
ReplyDeleteSo, so crafty!!! This is what I've been looking for for my jewelry! Perfect.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this, and as a jewelery designer I am always looking for unusual ways to store and display my jewelery - thanks :)
ReplyDeleteLove this!
ReplyDeleteLove your jewelry organizer and I love your jewlery! So fun and colorful! It looks fabulous. Pinned it!
ReplyDeleteJenn :)
What a fantastic idea!! I love these kind of novel solutions! :)
ReplyDeleteLOVE IT!! I'll be trying this for sure!!
ReplyDeleteI bought a jewelry mirror, and now we're afraid to hang it in the only place I wanted to put it because of plumbing in the wall. But I wonder if I could get away with hanging the cutlery trays on the wall with those 3M sticky tabs.
What a neat idea. I might have to try this with some modifications. I wear a lot of stud earrings or smaller bits that I'd want to store too. But I just realized how many necklaces I have. If they were easier to grab and go (and not have to untangle) I would TOTALLY wear more varied stuff than the same old earring set every day. Awesome inspirtation!
ReplyDeleteBernadette @b3hd
Oh my gosh! I am in love! What a great way to display your goods! I thought my picture frame necklace organizer that I posted about last year was cool . . . but yours is super wow!
ReplyDeleteLove this. In fact just added to my ever-growing guide of "Favorite Organizing Products and Decluttering Tips." Giving (of course) full credit to your beautiful blog. Check it out here. Maybe we can get you to do your own list?!

thanks for this fab inspiration, the right gift for my best girlfriend
ReplyDeleteI have a negative comment to put before you all !!!!
ReplyDeleteIf you have thieves in your home, they can steal ALL your jewelry, and leave you with just the patch on the wall where the boxes used to be !!!!
Better to have items in many places, not just one spot, as that way only a small amount of baubles can be stolen !!!!
Even if it is just costume jewellery, it has a value to someone else - possibly to pay for drugs!
Cheryl
I agree I wouldn't hang the expensive stuff on a wall, but for costume this is a great idea. It's not worth all the trouble to hide it in multiple places, if they want it they'll find it...take it from someone who has been burglarized!
DeleteLove it! I've been searching and searching for the perfect way to store all of my necklaces too and this is just PERFECT! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteJennifer from Just Wedeminute--
PS I pinned it to pinterest!
Wow! Nice organizing idea! This idea can also be done for flower aranngements =) instead of accessories, different flowers in various sizes will take place and will be cool to put in home as decoration.
ReplyDeleteGreat Idea!! I have a lot of jewelry for you to ad to those beautiful organizers! I have very unique beautiful handcrafted jewelry of all styles and at pretty reasonable prices. You can follow me on pinterest under rebecca barney. If you wish to make a purchase, it is linked to my etsy store!
ReplyDeleteQUE BIEN ASI SE ENCUENTRA TODO RAPIDO.
ReplyDeleteMUY BUENA IDEA.
SALUDITOS.
I really love it! those are unique displays... looks like a divider type was it? Love them as my jewelry display for my store honey. Thanks for creation wonderful tips and creations. :) Really do love this display. Promise....
ReplyDeleteWhat a clever idea! Didn't the cup screw hooks cracked the plastic? I know it would be more expensive but won't the Command product hooks do the same thing; leaving no holes and they can be removed if necessary without making holes in your trays or walls. Just my two cents worth! I quickly read this so I will go back over it again to see if I missed any details.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! Easy, clever, inexpensive and functional! I really like it!
ReplyDeleteOMG! I have seen some super cool DIY jewelry holders. But it think this takes the cake. Not only is it creative but it is functional. I wanted to see if i could find an idea that would allow me to store my jewelry in my walk in closet somehow and I think this may fit the bill. It could even work behind a door. But its so simple in elegant that it can be made visible. WOW Awesome!!
ReplyDeleteA friend's hsuband made me one of the best jewelry storage containers I've ever had. He built a box using latice strips for the four sides, and a piece of particle board for the back. This was about 12x16 but could be any size you need. He then built a frame about an inch larger in both directions for the front, and attached it to one side of the box with hinges. Mirror was added to the frame and small gold hooks were screwed into the top of the box for necklaces to hang. We simply used a couple of screws to attach it to the wall. A fancy picture frame could be used instead of making your own frame for the mirror. The jewelry box can be stained or painted to match your decor. This method keeps the dust off your jewelry, and looks like a pretty framed mirror, not a jewelry box.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see a picture of what you're describing. steigerjj40@hotmail.com
DeleteThis eas really nice! I like a lot!!!
ReplyDeleteHave a nice day!!
I love your jewelry pieces I think they are all fun and unique and wish you the best. I don’t wear much jewelry but I like it very cool and geometric. Great color too.
ReplyDeleteJust saw this on Pinterest - genius!!! - and told my husband I need this. I have the exact space in my closet for it. All my costume jewelry is in ziplocs stuffed in my dresser, and I usually forget about half the things I have. Would love to be able to see them all in my closet where the clothes are! Thanks for the idea. And from all the other comments about how great your blog is - I'm your newest follower.
ReplyDeleteJulie
What a great idea! I've been looking for an armoire, but this is even better, because you can expand as needed. Sending my husband out right now!!
ReplyDeleteBest idea I've seen in a long time! And it is my job to source out creative storage solutions...awesome!
ReplyDeleteI love this idea!! I was just talking to my husband last night about how to store my jewelry better. I like your jewels as well. I am a Stella and Dot stylist, you should check out my site I think you will really enjoy the fantastic jewelry!!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.stelladot.com/sites/amandajlee
Pure genious! This is absolutely beautiful and incredibly functional.
ReplyDeleteThat is such a creative idea, I love it!
ReplyDeleteI did this and I love it! Thank you for this idea. Not only do I feel organized but crafty as well!!
ReplyDeleteYou, my dear, are brilliant!!! There isn't much out there for necklaces and chunky bracelets except those tall acrylic holders, flat trays and chunky boxes that take up a huge amount of space. I think if you were to glue felt on these you could market them.& You can cover them with material on the outside. Maybe you can even come up with a door or some sort of cover for them? Either way, this idea is pure genius!!!
ReplyDelete& I hope we all can live burglary free. Its' a big fear for me as well. I have locks all through out my home and I lock everything up before I go out. I hate it, but hey, this is New York.
I LOVE this! I've been trying to find a way to display my jewelry. Now to find the wall space to do this!! Such a creative idea!
ReplyDeletePS - are you by chance going to the Haven Conference in June??! It would be fun to meet you if you are!

Can you tell me where you got your drawers for your necklaces?
ReplyDeleteI Bought mine from Walmart! They were $9.95 each! They were originally Bamboo colored and we sprayed them White.
DeleteHope that helps
~Ashli
This is a really unique and quite adorable idea!! I've seen tons of suggestions for jewelry storage, but I've never seen a vertical display like you have set up here. It's cool that you can organize by color, like you have it set up, too. This is more of a good solution for people who own their homes and intend to stay for a while, simply because you have the trays directly affixed to the wall, but you could probably screw them down to a piece of plywood, and hang that like a picture frame, to avoid holes you don't really need. This is a fantastic idea, I can't wait to organize my jewelry this weekend, thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteThat is such a creative idea. I never would have thought of it. Great job...great jewelry also!
ReplyDeleteI just got the supplies to do this, but the screw length on the hooks is too long. We're you able to find hooks that were short enough to no show when you screwed them from the bottom? How did you handle that? Thank you!
ReplyDeleteOurs poked through a bit, so we just didn't screw them in all they way!!
ReplyDeleteI hope that helps a bit!!
Lots of Love
Ashli
un'idea meravigliosa!!!!!!!che bello!
ReplyDeleteThe jewelry information on this post is quite relevant
DeleteI love this idea! I saw it on pinterest and can't wait to make one for myself! Genius! I posted a link from my blog to yours today. Thanks for the awesome idea!

What a great way to store jewellery - I think I need to see if I can hunt down similar trays here in Australia. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat idea. Make an awesome present too.
ReplyDeleteClever....you could use a tension rod with a sheer to keep dust off of your pieces too!!!!
ReplyDeleteLove it!! Exactly what I wanted to showcase my for sale jewelry items! Can't say enough thank you's for this ides!! Wish my brain worked like yours, but all it does when I ask it to imagine something clever for display is go "DUH"..."UM"..."UH"... and that is all I get!
ReplyDeleteThanks again!!

I've been looking for a way to store my costume jewelry for ages and haven't liked the DIY ideas I've seen - until today!I know this is going in my closet, only I'll double it since I inherited my mom's jewelry (mostly cute, good quality costume) and I'll put a full length mirror between the two. LOVE this!!!
ReplyDeleteWhere did you get the shoe rack?
ReplyDeleteWhat's up everybody, here every one is sharing these experience, so it's nice to read this website, and I used to pay a visit this website daily.
ReplyDeleteCheck out my blog post ; games online
What a great idea!
ReplyDeleteWhere did u get the items at?
ReplyDeleteShe mentioned in her post that she got the 3 bamboo trays at Walmart for $10 each [$30], along with the can of spray paint for $5 and the rubber coated hooks for $3 each [she bought 2 pkgs], total $6. $41 for entire project. This is a really good way to hang & organize costume jewelry.
DeleteVery Nice and pretty display. I, too, have a LOT of costume jewelry and I just love this idea!
ReplyDeleteI love your idea better than mine. I use mug hooks and hang my necklaces and bracelets on the post, I close them up some so they aren't spread across my small space in the closet.
ReplyDelete
